Data information
The stream flow and level data used is measured around Kingston Bridge, obtained from the Environment Agency Real Time flood-monitoring API.Trend calculation is currently purely based off previous data - for example, the trend over the week is calculated as the difference between the average flow in 24 hours a week ago vs the last 24 hours.
Rainfall data is measured at 58 different stations in or near the Thames river basin catchment area above Teddington Lock (although the number of actually functioning stations is lower and varies). This data is provided by the Defra Hydrology Data API.
The rainfall data displayed is a weighted average: meaning it factors in each of the rainfall measuring stations upstream of Kingston, and the basin area they represent to calculate a more accurate number for the rainfall across the whole basin. If you are interested, click the button to view the rainfall basin map. This took me a lot of time to code and was a fun project! Due to limitations on the Defra service used, data for each day becomes available a bit late.
